Since this company is not being sued into oblivion, I am guessing they are not breaking any laws here.so what is going on? Which generally prohibits just publicizing it, especially for money. Thing is, normally when you buy data that data is still subject to the privacy policy that applied when it was collected. Now, since my address is not on any public records, I assume they had to have bought the data from someone. All it really shows is my home address, but I can't freaking understand where they got that. It doesn't show my phone, or any possible associates, or past addresses. Now, to my credit, that site lists a whole lot less information for me than it does for others. My friends can't even see who my other friends are, for example. I am on Facebook, but everything is as locked down as I could make it. I opt out of all information sharing practices (for example the credit card opt out options given in the "annual privacy notices"). I've been to court a few times, but not since I've been at my current address. For that matter I have never had any legal issue violation or otherwise. I don't and never have had a drivers license, let alone any kind of traffic violation. There are literally NO public records with my information on them. Now.the reason I was surprised, is because it shouldn't be. So, I was pretty shocked when my name and freaking home address popped up on that site. Protecting information, protecting against leaks, helping people to secure their data is my area of expertise and has been for some time. I have about 20 years experience in infosec/privacy, and went from being a director in one of the bigger names in that field to running a small startup. What I am trying to do, is to figure out where in the heck they could possibly be getting their information. I know there have been a lot of posts/alarm/hubbub over the familytreenow site, and I am not trying to add to that. Orgīuilding the global movement for the protection of privacy.
